European supermarket brands within the Ahold Delhaize group

Ahold Delhaize, Europe - international case study

Sustainability, efficiency & innovation

Background

Ahold Delhaize is one of the world’s largest food retail groups, with local supermarket brands serving more than 50 million shoppers each week in the United States, Europe and Indonesia.

The company is at the forefront of sustainable retailing. Each brand shares a passion for delivering great food, value and innovations, and for creating inclusive workplaces, that provide rewarding professional opportunities.

Initial implementation

With sustainability front of mind, Ahold Delhaize has been testing out Hanshow’s electronic shelf labels (the technology that drives Future Shelf) since 2018, in their Belgium and Netherlands stores.

They used Electronic Shelf Labels (ESLs) to manage price and promotion updates digitally, resulting in quicker and more dynamic pricing methods, such as automated price reductions for items close to their expiration date.

They also used the ESLs to help customers easily obtain product information and pay conveniently with mobile phones or near-field communication (NFC) cards.

Next level retail solutions

Due to the success of the technology, Ahold Delhaize has extended their partnership with Hanshow (Future Shelfs ESL technology provider), to introduce digital in-store applications across their European brands. Step 1 will see electronic shelf labels deployed throughout all remaining European stores. In Step 2 new in-store functions and capabilities, such as frictionless payment, in-store navigation and in-store advertising, will be developed and deployed via their Joint Innovation Lab.

“The digital applications we will develop through this partnership will enhance the customer experience in our stores and allow us to operate more efficiently,” said Wouter Kolk, CEO Ahold Delhaize Europe & Indonesia. “Hanshow offers best in class in-store applications and know-how, and we have been very pleased with their contribution to the mobile phone scan and pay service ‘YesWeScan’ at Delhaize and with the first wave of installed ESLs at Albert Heijn. This is an important step for Ahold Delhaize and our local brands to offer an easy and attractive shopping experience to our customers.”
